Transgender and suicide

Interesting study, depressing results:
Grant, Jaime M., Lisa A. Mottet, Justin Tanis, Jack Harrison, Jody L. Herman, and Mara Keisling. Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey. Washington: National Center for Transgender Equality and National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 2011.

-Government data puts suicide attempt rates of the general populace at roughly 1.6%

-Overall response of trans people to the question "have you ever attempted suicide":41%

-Employed trans people responded with 37% saying yes, unemployed 51%, those who lost a job due to bias 55%, and those working in an underground economy 60%

-18-24 reported the highest instances of attempts

Marx, Katz, and Knoll (2006) drew samples from young trans people living in San Francisco and had 32% report that they had attempted suicide (Marx, Katz, & Knoll, Attempted Suicide Among Transgender Persons: The Influence of Gender-based Discrimination and Victimization)
